Amazon Partial Refunds: Keep the Item, Costs & FBA Settings
An Amazon offer to “keep the item and get a partial refund” means a smaller refund without sending the product back. FBA sellers need to check whether this costs less than a physical return and suits the product and complaint.
What the program does: FBA Partial Refunds lets sellers enroll eligible products and set refund percentages. Customers who receive and accept an offer keep the item. Amazon’s announcement covers the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. Check the current options in the relevant marketplace before enrolling.
“Would you like to keep the item and get a partial refund instead?”
If you are a customer seeing this message, read the amount and conditions shown for that order before accepting. A partial refund returns only part of the payment. The offer’s terms should explain the outcome and whether a physical return is expected.
If you would prefer to return the item, review the other options in Your Orders or ask Amazon’s official support about the available resolution. An offer appearing on one purchase does not mean every order qualifies. Report the product’s condition accurately.
If the item may be unsafe: A refund does not make a damaged or hazardous product safe to use. Follow the relevant product-safety and Amazon instructions. Sellers should route reports of overheating, injury, contamination, or similar hazards into their safety process.
Three checks before accepting a keep-the-item offer
- Calculate what you still pay. On a $40 purchase, a $10 refund leaves $30 paid for the item, before any separate tax or payment adjustments. Decide whether the product is worth that amount to you in its actual condition.
- Read the resolution terms. Check the refund amount, payment destination and any stated effect on the order’s return options. If the screen is unclear, ask Amazon before accepting.
- Keep the confirmation. Save the final order message and check that the refund shown matches the offer accepted. Use Your Orders or official support if the amount or status is different.
If you still need a working replacement, include that cost in your decision. Keeping an unusable item at a discount may leave you paying for both the original and its replacement.
FBA Partial Refunds vs returnless refunds and normal returns
| Resolution | Customer refund | Physical product |
|---|---|---|
| Partial refund and keep | A portion of the payment, according to the offer | Customer keeps it; no resale recovery for the seller from that unit. |
| Full returnless refund | The full refund specified in that resolution | Customer is not expected to send it back under the resolution’s terms. |
| Refund with a physical return | Amount governed by the applicable return resolution | Product comes back for assessment, possible resale, removal, or disposal. |
These outcomes should not be treated as interchangeable in your margin analysis. A percentage-based partial refund is different from enrolling in a full returnless-resolution program. Seller-fulfilled return settings are also a separate workflow from FBA.
When is a partial refund cheaper? A worked example
Compare the additional cost of each refund option. The original product and outbound costs have already been incurred for either option; include any differences in fees, recovery value, or follow-up handling.
Illustrative assumptions: the full customer refund would be $40; a partial refund would be $10; a physical return costs $5 to process; the returned product has $20 of expected net recovery value. Assume fee and tax differences are zero for this example only.
| Resolution | Calculation | Additional cost |
|---|---|---|
| Partial refund; customer keeps item | $10 refund | $10 |
| Full refund with return | $40 refund + $5 return cost − $20 net recovery | $25 |
| Difference | $25 − $10 | $15 less cost for the partial-refund outcome |
This is a comparison of resolutions, not the profit on the original sale. If the returned item’s net recovery value were $38, the full-return cost in the same example would be $7. In that case, the $10 partial refund would cost $3 more.
Partial-refund cost
Refund amount + additional fees or handling attributable to that resolution.
Physical-return cost
Full refund + return and handling costs + fee adjustments − expected net inventory recovery.
Use actual settlement data. Estimate recovery value after the chance of an unsellable return, inspection costs, resale discounts, and any future costs needed to realize that value. Include taxes and fee credits consistently on both sides. Do not assume one refund percentage protects every SKU.
Find the recovery value where the two options cost the same
Using the same $40 refund, $5 return cost and $10 partial refund, the break-even net recovery is $35: $40 + $5 − $10. Below $35, the partial refund has the lower additional cost under these assumptions. Above $35, the physical return has the lower cost. Recalculate if fees, taxes or handling differ.
Expected recovery should reflect the mix of returned conditions. For example, if 60% of similar returns yield $30 net and 40% yield $2 net, the weighted recovery estimate is (0.60 × $30) + (0.40 × $2) = $18.80. Use those figures only as an illustration; derive your estimate from comparable products and observed outcomes.
Define “net” consistently. If inspection or disposal costs are already deducted from recovery value, do not also add those same costs to the return-cost side of the calculation.
How to enable FBA Partial Refunds and track results
Amazon’s official setup announcement gives this route:
Use the marketplace where you intend to enroll products.
Under FBA returns evaluations & ownership settings, select Partial Refunds and Edit.
Confirm the options available for each product. Record the enrolled ASINs, the selected percentages, and the date you enabled them.
Amazon says partial-refund transactions appear in the FBA Returns dashboard with the status “Complete – Return not expected.” Match the return record to the order’s payment and refund transactions.
Amazon’s announcement says sellers can add or remove products. If your settings or eligibility differ from the launch description, follow the current marketplace screen and linked Help guidance. Do not assume a particular percentage range or upload method is available in every account.
Which products should a seller enroll?
Start with a small set of eligible ASINs for which you have dependable return-cost and recovery data. Price alone is a weak selection rule: a low-priced item with good resale recovery may be a worse candidate than a bulky item that is expensive to return.
| Decision factor | What to review |
|---|---|
| Return economics | Actual refund amounts, return costs, fee adjustments, and expected recoverable value. |
| Reason for dissatisfaction | Whether the issue is a minor, understood concern or a pattern that needs inspection and corrective action. |
| Safety and compliance | Current program eligibility, product restrictions, and whether a keep-the-item outcome fits the complaint. |
| Quality visibility | How you will investigate defects when the unit does not return for physical inspection. |
| Customer experience | Whether the offer provides a clear, fair resolution for the specific situation. |
A practical pilot log
Keep one record per enrolled ASIN with the start date, percentage, units sold, partial refunds, other refunds, customer-reported reasons, refund cost, return cost avoided, and estimated recovery value forgone. Use order-level evidence where the dashboard and settlement records can be matched.
- Set conditions for pausing the pilot. For example, pause enrollment if the actual resolution cost exceeds your comparison case or a new safety pattern appears.
- Review complete costs. A fall in physical returns is not enough to establish that profit improved.
- Investigate repeated complaints. Use available records to test a suspected pattern. A refund request alone is not evidence of buyer abuse.
- Follow up on product quality. Retain customer feedback and supplier follow-up. Where physical inspection is needed, use the appropriate return or safety process.
Refunding a customer does not close an underlying product-safety issue or seller enforcement notice. Keep the commercial resolution and the corrective action connected.
Example: reconcile one partial refund before judging the pilot
Suppose your pilot log records a $10 partial refund on a $40 order. Match the order reference across the returns dashboard and payment records, then record the actual refund and any fee adjustment. Keep estimated return-cost savings in a separate column from money actually credited or debited.
If a later payment adjustment appears for the same order, update its total resolution cost. Counting the first partial refund alone can understate the outcome. Likewise, an assumed $20 recovery value forgone is an estimate for comparison, not another $20 charge in the settlement statement.
At each review, compare similar ASINs and return reasons. Note changes in selling price, packaging and product quality. This makes the pilot useful for deciding which products to keep enrolled and which underlying complaints need attention.
Amazon partial-refund FAQ
Why does Amazon offer a partial refund to keep an item?
Amazon says the FBA program can reduce return shipping and processing costs and improve the customer experience. The customer receives part of the payment back and keeps the product under the offer’s terms.
Is an Amazon partial refund the same as a restocking fee?
No. A refund-and-keep offer resolves an order without a physical return. A deduction from a refund after a returned item is assessed is a different situation with its own applicable rules.
Can every FBA product receive a partial-refund offer?
Eligibility varies by product and marketplace. Use the eligible-product selection and current Help text in your marketplace. Enrollment also does not guarantee an offer on every order.
Does a partial refund affect return-rate metrics or fees?
Check the current definitions for the particular metric and fee, then reconcile actual reports. A return-dashboard entry alone does not establish how every return-rate badge or fee is calculated.
Where can I see a partial refund without a return?
Start with the FBA Returns dashboard and match the completed resolution to payment transactions. Amazon’s announcement identifies “Complete – Return not expected” as the status to look for.
What refund percentage should I choose?
Use the available percentages and the costs for that SKU. Compare the proposed refund with a physical return after costs and expected recovery. Start with a limited pilot and revise based on actual outcomes.
